September FYI Newsletter

Program Information and Hours: The Youth Center is a safe and secure drop-in program; you can relax with friends, play ping-pong or pool, watch TV, read and do homework, play PS4 games, and utilize the large computer lab. Daily hours throughout the school year are: Monday – Friday, 2:00pm – 7:00pm. The Youth Center is closed on Saturday & Sunday.

Student Advisory Council: The Youth Center is governed by a Student Advisory Council (SAC), much like a school is governed by a student council. The group meets twice a month, and sponsors a number of events throughout the year, and is highly involved in Community Service projects. This club is open to all HS & MS youth who participate in the Youth Center. To sign-up, stop by the Youth Center after school and complete a brief application form. The second meeting is scheduled for September 6th after school. Anyone that may be interested in participating in SAC should attend the September 6th meeting.

Welcome Back BBQ: The annual free Welcome Back BBQ will take place on Thursday, September 13th. We will be giving out free cheeseburgers, hotdogs, chips, and drinks. The planned start time is 3:30pm and it will end once all of the food is gone. Anyone that attends the Youth Center after school may participate in the BBQ.

Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT):  The first meeting in September will be on Monday, September 10th. Anyone that is interested in joining SWAT should attend this meeting. If you would like additional information please contact Ms. Massaro.

Facility Update: During the last two weeks of Summer Camp our main air condition unit was hit by a storm and stopped functioning. For the past month the Youth Center has been operating on limited A/C supplied by the other two A/C units and floor fans. We would like to thank the Flagler Schools Maintenance Department for their hard work in replacing our A/C unit with a new system.

Road To Success Program: RTS has helped 167 young adults earn their GEDs to date with 20 of those earning honors. RTS is a year-round program and we are enrolling now for September and October.  RTS enrolls 45 students per year, we currently have 37 seats left and have a waiting list for September. Over the last several months RTS has had 100% of students graduating with their GEDs and a job or post-secondary education. Last year RTS had seven students enter and complete a “paid work experience” while earning over a total of $10,000.Our events this month included: A field trip to the Museum of Arts and Science in Daytona, Graduation pictures completed, Food handler’s certification, Mock interviewing sessions and Wells Fargo banking overview of financials. In September we look forward to having the UCF nursing students come back out and conduct health and career workshops, and Linda Broxton will be conducting First Aid & CPR certification. If you have any questions about our Youth Program please contact either Taahira Lee, Case manager 437-7526 ext. 1189 or Brian Willard, Program Manager @ 386-437-8279.
