September FYI Newsletter

Youth Center Info and Hours of Operation:  The Youth Center is a safe and secure drop-in program; you can relax with friends, play ping-pong or pool, watch TV, read and do homework, play PS4 games, and utilize the large computer lab. Daily hours throughout the school year are: Monday – Friday, 2:00pm – 7:00pm.  The Youth Center is Closed on Saturday & Sunday. 

 

Youth Center’s Student Advisory Council: (SAC): The Youth Center is governed by a Student Advisory Council (SAC), much like a school is governed by a student council. The group meets twice a month, and sponsors a number of events throughout the year, and is highly involved in Community Service projects. This club is open to all HS & MS youth who participate in the Youth Center. To sign-up, stop by the Youth Center after school and complete a brief application form. The 1st meeting is scheduled for September 14th after school.

 

Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Club @ Youth Center: If you are tired of all the sneaky promotions and tricks “BIG TOBACCO” uses to lure smokers, this after school club is for you! The group meets every other Monday, in the Youth Center and is open to any 7th -12th graders.  To sign-up, stop by the Youth Center after school and complete a brief application form. The first SWAT meeting will take place on September 11th right after school.

 

Teen Talk / SPORT: Every other Wednesday, Ms. Victoria, an Adolescent Behavioral Specialist from Stuart Marchman will conduct SPORT- a new program for Prevention Plus Wellness. The 1st meeting for September will take place on Wednesday, September 6th at 2:45pm. Any students interested in participating should come to the Youth Center’s Computer Lab after school.

 

Facility Improvements: Over the summer some improvements were made to the Youth Center including adding LED lights into the Computer Lab as well as new signage around the building. Over the coming months Brandon Seminara the Assistant Director will be overseeing the redesign of our Computer Lab as well as some other improvements.

 

Road to Success Program August Update: RTS has helped 121 young adults earn their GEDs to date. Workshops this month included resume building, series of interviews to work on skills, Wells Fargo completed a financial and banking workshop, DJJ conducted a “Know the Law” class, FTI’s Travis Thomas provided a program overview, 4H conducted a health workshop, US ARMY presenters and Daytona State College presentation by Krystal Cherry. We had 12 students complete graduation pictures along with First Aid & CPR and Food Handlers certification courses.
