February FYI Newsletter

Program Information and Hours: The Youth Center is a safe and secure drop-in program; you can relax with friends, play ping-pong or pool, watch TV, read and do homework, play PS4 games, and utilize the large computer lab. Daily hours throughout the school year are: Monday – Friday, 2:00pm – 7:00pm. The Youth Center is closed on Saturday & Sunday.

Director’s Message: At this time last month I was sitting down to write my first (of I hope many) director’s message.  I had the opportunity to do that thing that makes every student feel awkward on the first day of class, which was to tell you about me.  Today, as I sit down, I want to take time to let you know about some pretty awesome people who I have had the opportunity to get to know in my first month of my new position.  Over the last month I have been able to observe one of the things that has made the Youth Center such a wonderful place for students. There are a lot of things that make it wonderful.  The facility itself is obviously up there with tons of fun activities for the kids. But at the heart of it all, is people. The students have been very welcoming to me here at the Youth Center and I already have two new best friends.  I also want to take this time to give credit to and thank Brandon Seminara. Brandon has done so much to ensure that my transition has been a smooth one and is the reason that everything here at the Youth Center operates with such efficiency.  There is a reason he was the Flagler County Employee of the year for 2017. I also want to acknowledge and thank Mrs. Tyler and Ms. Peden for all of their help and support during this transition and most importantly, for their love and passion for the kids.  Without these people, the Youth Center would not be able to accomplish its goal. And with that, I want to leave you with a thought, Jackie Robinson once said, “a life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives”. I want to thank Ms. Massaro, Brandon, Mrs. Tyler, and Ms. Peden for everything they do because I know lives have been changed because of them.

Student Advisory Council:. On February 7 and February 21, SAC will meet at 2:15 in the Youth Center. If you are interested in participating in SAC please plan to attend the meeting on February 7th.

Road to Success Program:  RTS has helped 190 young adults earn their GEDs to-date with 26 of those earning honors.   RTS is a FREE year-round program and currently enrolling now for February and March.  RTS enrolls up to 45 students per year, we focus on GED prep, life skills and pre-employment training. Over the last several months RTS has had 96.5% of students graduating with their GEDs and a job or post-secondary education. In January we started a new internship program with Flagler Humane Society were students will work at their thrift store and working at the adoption center. Students also had in-house educational and training workshops by Lauren Roeck from Wells Fargo, Sayskids Bryan Perry, Military recruiters, Food Handlers Certification, resume writing assistance and a field trip to the Daytona International Speedway for an All Access Tour.
