April FYI Newsletter

Director’s Message:  As I sit down to write this month’s newsletter, I can’t help but feel “out of place”. Currently, the Youth Center, along with all district facilities, is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  As I work from home, and I look out the window and see the sun shining beautifully, I can’t help but look forward to brighter days. I want to commend you all on how you are handling and adapting to this pandemic.  Even though we are all working from home, it is important to remember, schools are not closed. The buildings might be closed, but school is without a doubt, open for business! I know these times bring about a certain level of stress and anxiety that comes with the unknown.  But I assure you, we will make it through this and we will come out better! I can remember my college baseball coach telling us, if it is important, you will find a way. If it’s not, you will find an excuse! All I have seen across the entire district during this pandemic is collaboration and solutions!  You are finding a way, because it is that important. I implore you to continue to care, continue to find solutions, and continue to make an impact in the lives of our students! Great problems require great solutions. And I have never been more proud to say that I am a part of a TEAM, than I am right now.  The Flagler Schools team is the best in the country! If there is anything I can do for any of you to help lift the spirits of your students, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Summer Camp: At this time, summer camp registration has been put on hold.  Please check back later on our website http://flagleryouthcenter.com/summer for more details.

Spotlight on Youth Talent Show: Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this years show has been canceled.

Road to Success Program:  This year to date RTS students have earned 226 GEDs, with 27 students who received honors.   Students are obtaining their GEDs, going into the military, getting jobs and enrolling into local colleges.  Since the crisis we have moved from classroom learning to virtual learning through Zoom. Students also received take home packets to study and RTS staff are ready and available to assist.  We have created a virtual job board for the students - yes, companies are hiring! RTS is currently taking applications over the phone and through emails. We will continue to be open year-round, you can earn your GED before the summer ends.

If you have any questions about enrolling into the RTS Youth Program or would like to partner with our Paid Internship program, please contact us at 386.437.8279.   Willardb@flaglerschools.com , Brian Willard, Program Manager.

George Washington Carver Community Center: Currently, The George Washington Carver Center is closed, just like all county and school district facilities.  Lunch distribution is still taking place, however we have moved to the parking lot next door of the Versa Lee Mitchell Community Center.  Pizza Parle and Flagler Basketball has been canceled for this month.
